Open Rank Professor in Strategic Communication
Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time open rank faculty appointment in Strategic Communication, to be appointed to the Journalism and Strategic Communication Program.
We seek candidates with an active research program in strategic communication focused on the Global South that encompasses such areas as data-driven strategic communication, digital marketing communication, or the application of AI, innovations, and digital technologies to strategic communication, who consider such areas as persuasion, media effects, and social influence broadly, who include ethics, gender, race, and/or coloniality in their analysis, and who have linguistic competence and field experience in their research and/or practice area. We expect successful candidates to have a Ph.D. in Strategic Communication or a related field by the time of appointment. Professional experience in the industry is an asset.

Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to our distinctive Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), a community of evidence-based storytellers devoted to understanding the media, cultures, societies, politics, and history of the countries of the Global South. This includes mentoring our Undergraduate Global Fellows, participating in reading and research groups, and contributing to panels, seminars, conferences, and publications.
In addition to a demonstrated publication track record or evidence of a highly promising trajectory commensurate with rank and/or career stage, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Candidates should have experience teaching courses in PR, advertising, and/or marketing communication and have the skills and ability to teach both foundational strategic communication courses and elective courses that speak to their research field. These include teaching existing courses in the Strategic Communication Minor (e.g., “Writing for PR” or “Introduction to Strategic Communication”), as well as developing new courses in areas like data-driven strategic communication, digital marketing communication, or the application of AI, innovations, and digital technologies to strategic communication, along with graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, Film and Design, Middle East Studies, and Media and Politics.
NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region, women, and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
